Recycling

Our autumn challenge is to create a piece using recycled materials. We are hoping that lots of you will join in this challenge as it is the first of three running up to our exhibition in January 2026 at Denbies Wine Estate.

Sue Mills has kindly offered to provide everyone with more free recycled material from her furnishing fabrics books. Take one fabric (or more if you prefer) and add your own recycling materials to this to create a piece up to 1m on any side. You can be as imaginative as you like: old clothes, paint, plastic waste, yarn or even an old comb! We welcome any ideas – your theme could be a pictorial representation (eg your garden) or something completely abstract; just enjoying playing with the materials and textures.

The only constraint is the size (up to 1m on any one side) and the fact that we would like you to use at least one technique from any of the workshops run by CQ Surrey. These include working with metallics, Lutradur, Tyvek, hand sewing, appliqué, dyeing, colourwash, paper lamination, using stuffing for 3D effects etc.

Your piece doesn’t have to be a flat quilt but could be a garment or bag, for example.

The Challenge Reveal will be held during our 8 February 2025 meeting. As with our previous ‘Influenced by an Artist’ Challenge, we’d love to hear about your inspirations for your work on this day too.
