In-house workshop – Dyeing in Plastic Bags

12 October 2024

Janine Pound led us on a fun day of dyeing in plastic bags. She had kindly pre-prepared the soda ash and salt solutions required to mix with the Procion MX dyes, as well as pre-mixing a variety of dye colours. So we just had to arrive with pre-washed fabrics and play!

Some of us experimented with different fabric types (eg cotton, linen, polycotton and mulberry paper). Others tried various methods of folding and resists to achieve different effects. It was great fun and produced some interesting results, shared on CQ Surrey’s WhatsApp Group afterwards.

We also enjoyed our members’ ‘show and tell’, including some finished work from our recent Anne Kelly workshop.

This was also the day we launched our next CQ Surrey members’ challenge: ‘Recycling’. Full details can be found in the Challenges section of the website.  As part of the challenge, members were able to take pieces of fabric samples (or whole books of samples!), kindly provided by Sue Mills. There was so much fabric – it was like Christmas had come early!

As ever, the day was further enhanced by delicious home-made cakes, raffle prize winners, some lovely freebie giveaways by members, including a dye pot and alpaca wool, and, of course, lots of laughter.
