Close To Home

For this challenge we would like you to make a piece with a sense of place. You can take your inspiration from anywhere in Surrey, Sussex or Kent – reflecting the counties in which CQS members live, as well as the homes of most of the visitors to Denbies.

The place you choose could be urban, rural, industrial, by the sea, in the air…

You could depict a landmark that others may recognise but your challenge piece does not need to be a figurative landscape. For example, you might create an abstract interpretation of how a place you love (or loathe) makes you feel.

Size: 42cm x 55cm, either portrait or landscape
These sizes will enable 2 rows of exhibits to be hung in the gallery.

Techniques & finishing
You may use any techniques. Your finished piece must be the correct size and
suitable to be hung flat on the wall (hanging sleeve instructions will be available later). It should conform to the general definition of a quilt ie at least 2 layers held together by stitch.

Alternative sizing for 3D pieces
We are expecting most submissions to be suitable for wall hanging. However, if you only work in 3D and wish to submit a piece, it should not exceed 55cm in any dimension. If selected, it will be displayed on a table or you may supply a suitable plinth.

Deadline: 12 July 2025
The show and tell for this challenge will be at our July meeting.
