27 April 2024
This day was one of our extra workshop days in addition to our regular monthly meetings.
Having been very inspired by Sarah’s talk a fortnight earlier, we returned for a full day workshop with her. Sarah’s book From Collage to Quilt was the basis of her workshop.

We started by cutting up magazines to get an assortment of colourful paper shapes: lines, circles, half-moons, triangles, and other irregular shapes. Sarah then encouraged us to experiment with the placement of these on some plain background papers.

Once happy with our designs, she showed us how to use a square-holed template to isolate areas we could enlarge and explore further.

Using a plastic see-through grid with squares marked on it, we then took large sheets of paper and added square grids to that. We were then able to size up our designs to our required finished size for the fabric.
Sarah also demonstrated how to sew crosses easily, where the lines matched up. What a revelation!
We then set about cutting and collaging and sewing our fabrics to create beautiful experimental designs.
It was such a fun day, and we went home with useful techniques learned that will be with us for a lifetime of future textile art.
PS At the following meeting some members came and shared their quilts finished after Sarah’s workshop – and fabulous they were too!
